Oranmore Heritage Winter Lecture series launches with Lecture on Storm Archaeology on the Connacht coast.

Oranmore Heritage hopes to have a packed house for the launch lecture in their 2014/2015 Winter Heritage Lecture series. The talk will be held on Wednesday, 29th October 2014 at 7.30pm in Oranmore Library.

Entitled ‘Bualadh Isteach: Storm Archaeology on the Connacht Coast with special emphasis on the Oranmore area’ this lecture will be delivered by Michael Gibbons and is the first in a monthly lecture series which will continue until next March.

Michael Gibbons is one of Ireland’s leading field archaeologists. Michael will show the spectacular scenery on offer across Ireland and will also provide information on both the geological formation of the region and the history. Michael runs tours for academic and student groups, as well as for individuals seeking a deeper understanding of Ireland’s rich cultural heritage.

Admission is free and all are welcome.


Heritage Lecture: ‘Hanna and Francis Sheehy Skeffington – a Family View’

Oranmore Heritage 2013/2014 Winter Lecture Series concludes with lecture on Sheehy Skeffingtons to be delivered by their granddaughter.

Oranmore Heritage invites locals and others to join them for the concluding lecture in their 2013/2014 Winter Heritage Lecture series. The talk will be held on Wednesday, 26th March at 7.30pm in Oranmore Library.

The lecture is entitled ‘Hanna and Francis Sheehy Skeffington – a Family View” and will detail the life of the historic couple who co-founded the Irish Women’s Franchise League in the early 20th Century and were active during the 1913 Dublin Lock out. After Francis was shot by the British in 1916, his wife Hanna continued to work for women’s rights and to speak about her husband’s murder and seek to vindicate his name. She went on hunger strike and was imprisoned several times.

Dr. Micheline Sheehy Skeffington is a granddaughter of Hanna and Francis. She is a lecturer in NUI, Galway and has written and published extensively in the area of Botany.

Admission is free and all are welcome. The Oranmore Heritage Winter Lecture series ran from October until March and will re-commence in October 2014.


Heritage Lecture: “The Battle of Aughrim”

Oranmore Heritage Winter Lecture Series continues with lecture on 26th February on historic battle

Oranmore Heritage invites locals and others to join them for the fourth in their 2013–2014 Winter Heritage Lecture series. The talk will be held on Wednesday, 26th February at 7.30pm in Oranmore Library.

The lecture is entitled ‘The Batttle of Aughrim” and will be delivered by Mr. Luke Nolan. Luke Nolan is a Local Historian from Kilconnell, County Galway. He has extensive knowledge of the history and details of the Battle of Aughrim and was a leading member of the Committee which spearheaded and built the renowned and popular Battle of Aughrim Interpretive Centre in Aughrim Village, County Galway.

Admission is free and all are welcome. The Oranmore Heritage annual Heritage Lecture series will continue until March 2014 and lectures are hosted monthly in Oranmore Library.

Oranmore Heritage Winter Lecture Series continues with lecture on 29th January by Paul Duffy

Oranmore Heritage invites locals and others to join them for the third lecture in their 2013–2014 Winter Heritage Lecture series. The talk will be held on Wednesday, 29th January at 7.30pm in Oranmore Library.

The lecture is entitled ‘A Trip Through County Galway in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries with Postcards’ and will be delivered by Mr. Paul Duffy. Mr Duffy is a Chartered Engineer and has lectured, published and broadcast extensively on Ireland’s engineering heritage.

Admission is free and all are welcome. The Oranmore Heritage annual Heritage Lecture series will continue until March 2014 and lectures are hosted monthly in Oranmore Library.


‘Claregalway Castle and its Environs’

Second lecture in Oranmore Heritage Winter Lecture Series to take place on 27th November

Oranmore Heritage invites locals and others to join them for the second lecture in their 2013–2014 Winter Heritage Lecture series. The talk will be held on Wednesday, 27th November at 7.30pm in Oranmore Library.

The lecture is entitled ‘Claregalway Castle and its Environs’ and will be delivered by Mr. Eamonn O’Donoghue

Mr O’Donoghue is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Galway. Having always had a deep interest in archaeology Mr O’Donoghue purchased Claregalway Castle in 1999 and has lovingly restored the monument over a decade. The castle is now open to the public during the summer months and various events are hosted there during the winter also. He will give a lecture about the history attached to the castle and the local area and also share the experience of restoring the castle.

Heritage Week 2013: ORANMORE HERITAGE PRESENTS CONNAUGHT RANGER AND LOCAL MILITARY EXHIBITION

Oranmore Heritage, a community heritage group in Oranmore will host an Exhibition in Oranmore Library, Main Street, Oranmore to coincide with National Heritage Week 2013.

The exhibition, which will be accessible during library opening hours and run from the 17th to 25th August will feature photographs and memorabilia of the Connaught Rangers and Local Military.

The exhibition will include some battalion orders for the first battalion of Connaught Rangers who were stationed in Firozpur (formerly Ferozepore) India in 1914. It will also include the personal papers of a man who served with the Connaught Rangers at that time.

Photographs and memorabilia of members who served with the Irish Defence Forces in the Congo, the Lebanon and Cyprus will also be on display.

Admission to the exhibition is free and all are welcome.

‘Leather Wings and Bushy Tails’

Oranmore Heritage invites locals and others to join them for the first lecture in their 2013–2014 Winter Heritage Lecture series. The talk will be held on Wednesday, 30th October 2013 at 7.30pm in Oranmore Library.

The first lecture is entitled ‘Leather Wings and Bushy Tails’ and will be delivered by Dr. Kate McAney.

Dr. McAney is Mammal Development Officer for the Vincent Wildlife Trust, in Ireland. Her talk will centre on the work she has been doing for the Trust on three Irish mammals, the lesser horseshoe bat, the Irish stoat and the pine marten. She will give background information on the three species and will include descriptions of the practical measures taken to protect maternity colonies of the horseshoe bat throughout the west of Ireland. She will also outline the results of a pilot study on the Irish stoat and describe research on the Pine Martin.

‘Our Farming Heritage’ – Heritage Week Photographic Exhibition

Exhibition of Photographs in Oranmore Library for Heritage Week 2012.

This exhibition showed a number of photographs of farmers and their families from Oranmore area and surrounds over the past 40 years. It ran from Saturday, 18th August to Saturday 25th August to coincide with National Heritage Week 2012.

2011/2012 Winter Heritage Lecture Series
The concluding lecture in Oranmore Heritage Winter Lecture Series on ‘Engineering Heritage of Galway was held on Wednesday 28th March 2012 at 7.30pm in Oranmore Library to a full house. The lecture was entitled ‘Engineering Heritage of County Galway’ and was delivered by Paul Duffy.The lecture dealt with the industrial archaeology of the area between Merlin Park and Clarinbridge and was based on ongoing research into the Engineering Heritage of County Galway. The topics covered were Mining & Quarrying, Piers & Harbours, Roads, Railways, and a proposed Ship Canal. Paul Duffy C. Eng, F.I.E.I. has published extensively on Ireland’s Industrial Heritage. Oranmore Heritage wishes to thank all those who attended the lectures of the Winter Lecture series and to thank John Lawlor and the staff of Oranmore Library for their continued support and assistance
Ms. Clare Griffiin delivered the fourth lecture in Oranmore Heritage’s Winter Lecture Series on ‘Linen, Lace and Lavender’. The lecture was held on Wednesday, 29th February 2012.
Mr. Willie Henry delivered the third lecture in Oranmore Heritage’s Winter Lecture Series on ‘Some Aspects of Oranmore Heritage’. The lecture was held on Wednesday, 25th Janaury 2012.
Mr. Walter Raftery delivered the second lecture in Oranmore Heritage’s Winter Lecture Series on ‘Memories of the Congo’ in November 2011. For more info click here

As part of national Heritage Week which ran from 20th – 28th August, 2011 Oranmore Heritage hosted a number of events.
20th – 27th August – Photograph Exhibition in Oranmore Library, Main Street, Oranmore.
The exhibition featured wedding photographs featuring Oranmore weddings prior to 1960.
28th August, 11am Guided Shorewalk
A guided shorewalk commencing at Oranmore Castle took place on Sunday, 28th August. This event was organised in cooperation with Oranmore Celtic Shore Festival www.oranmorecelticshorefest.com
27th August, 12noon Guided Tour of Old Graveyard, Oranmore
A guided walk of the Old Graveyard was held on 27th August. It was led by committee member Alice Scanlan and Dr. Christy Cunniffe. The well attended event was organised in cooperation with Oranmore Celtic Shore Festival and was a great success

Annual General Meeting – Tuesday, 10th May, 2011
Oranmore Heritage held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 10th May in the meeting room of Oranmore Library at 8pm. The committee and interested members of the public attended to hear a full report of the achievements and activities of the group over the year.
Following our successful Winter Heritage Lecture Series during which heritage lectures were held monthly from October until April, Oranmore Heritage is looking forward to another year of working on heritage projects and organising free heritage events for the people of Oranmore.
John Grealy, the Chairperson of Oranmore Heritage since its foundation some years ago stepped back and Kathleen Cannon was elected new Chairperson.

The fifth event in our Lecture Series was held on Wednesday, 30th March 2011 at Oranmore Library when Captain Hayden Lawford, the first Aer Arann pilot, delivered a higly interesting lecture entitled ‘Oranmore Aerodrome – Part 1 1927- 1939’

The fourth event in our Lecture Series was held on Wednesday, 23rd February 2011 at Oranmore Library when Mr. Donal Taheny delivered his excellent presentation on ‘The Big houses of County Galway’ to a packed house.
Heritage Lecture – Wednesday, 26th January, 2011
The third event in our Lecture Series was held on Wednesday, 26th January 2011 at Oranmore Library. A very interesting lecture entitled ‘The Priest and the Submarine Man’ was delivered by Mr. Michael Conneely and was on the subject of John Holland (1840-1914) of Liscannor, Co. Clare who invented the submarine.
Heritage Lecture – Wednesday, 24th November, 2010
The second event in our Lecture Series was held on Wednesday, 24th November 2010 at Oranmore Library. A lecture entitled ‘George Wilkinson – Builder of Irish Workhouses’ was delivered by Mr. Walter Raftery. The lecture was well attended by Oranmore residents and others and was a great success.
Website Launch & Heritage Talk – Wednesday, 27th October

The Launch of our website www.oranmoreheritage.org was held on Wednesday, 27th October 2010 at Oranmore Library at 7.30pm. The event was well attended by locals of Oranmore and others. Chairperson of Oranmore Heritage John Grealy introduced the website and outlined some of the work carried out on the Old Graveyard in Oranmore by Oranmore Heritage. Following this Bill Scanlan, a former lighthouse keeper delivered our inaugural Heritage Lecture which was entitled ‘Lighthouses’.
